Upon the British Expeditionary Force's arrival in France, trained junior officers were scarce, leading to only the first rifle platoon in a company being commanded by subalterns, while the others were led by platoon sergeant-majors. Now, most platoons have officers in charge, but PSMs still exist. British Army rifle squads, or sections, consist of eight men: a corporal, Bren gunner, and six riflemen. The Lee Enfield Mk III rifle, similar to their fathers' in the Great War, is used, but the Bren light machinegun has replaced the old Lewis gun. Two unfamiliar weapons to their fathers are the 2" light mortar and the Boys anti-tank rifle.
