The title of the book comes from the nickname given to a large cachalot at the center of the mystery.This is a first-person account of a white giant cachalot named Moby Dick, whom the captain Achab obsessively pursues after he broke his leg on a previous expedition, and is told by the marine Ismaël as he sets off aboard the baleinier Pequod. Work included in the American Renaissance movement, Moby-Dick faced mixed reviews upon its release, was a financial failure, and was destroyed at the time of the author's death in 1891.
