VINTAGE PARROT KUNA MOLA APPLIQUÉ TEXTILE ART Panamanian

Origin and Creation: Molas are created by the Guna (Kuna) women, an indigenous group from Panama and Colombia. They are made using a reverse appliqué technique involving several layers of different colored cotton cloth. The design is formed by cutting away parts of each layer and meticulously hand-stitching the edges.
Purpose: The term "mola" originally referred to the women's blouse, and these elaborate panels form the front and back of the traditional garment.
Cultural Significance: Molas are an important expression of Guna cultural identity and a significant source of revenue when sold as art. The designs often incorporate images from daily life, nature (like the parrot in the image), and popular culture.
